The Taiwan Insight–IJTS special issue is an initiative embarked on by both organisations since 2024 with an aim to produce a joint publication twice a year. The first Taiwan Insight–IJTS special issue (March 2024) was on the theme of democracy and the challenges it faces with reference to populism, which is connected to the topical section published in the International Journal of Taiwan Studies 7(2) in autumn 2024.
The second Taiwan Insight–IJTS special issue (August 2024) focuses on ‘AI and Taiwan Studies’. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world around us, it is attendant upon societies to understand both its contribution and its complications. Given its precarious regional and international geostrategic position, Taiwan may feel the effects of AI more than many other societies. This special issue, written by authors who have previously published on a variety of themes in the IJTS, serves as an attempt to encourage non-AI specialists of social sciences, arts & humanities to try and join the conversation about AI’s impact and Taiwan studies’ responses.
Adam Barnett is the coordinator of the second IJTS-Taiwan Insight special issue for August 2024. Adam Barnett is a second year PhD Student at the University of Lincoln, UK, researching populism at the United Nations Climate and Biodiversity Negotiations. He previously completed an MSc at LSE and a BA at the University of Bristol, and has worked for several environmental NGOs in roles relating to political campaigning and strategy.
